Aims and Objective

The primary aim of this project is to experiment an interactive media that is different from the traditional book reading for education. Also let new generation's teenager knowing the history of the Nanking Massacre more profoundly and have the unique personal experience of what happened at that time. The main contribution of this project is to apply the game technology to create an extraordinary and fun way of learning for education. Behind the Nanking Massacre, we further let players understand the message about war and human, the conflict between people, so leading China to walk into new generation. The content of the software will fully based on historical fact. Besides, the software will have true photos and video clips

Timeline and Milestones

This project was firstly started at June 2002 and currently still under development. The project is divided into 3 phases, Research, Design and Implementation.

  • Research Phase, I study the history of Nanking Massacre, testing the LithTech Engine. We also go to Nanjing for site-research. The milestone of this stage is to come up a prelim Design Doc and prepared a playable demo to present project for Nanjing Memorial Head, Mr. Chu Shing San.
  • Design Phase, after the discussion with Mr. Chu, we revised our design and come out more concise design doc. I also start to create the program framework for the game. The animation team also started to build the required model.
  • Implementation Phase, we start to build up a complete demo. I integrate all the stuff we have and design the whole level. The milestones for this phase are. 1. Submit the demo for the Independent Game Festival Student Showcase, 2. Final Presentation.

Contributions

  • Dr Gino Yu, supervisor of thisMaster Project, for his encouragement, advice and guidance throughout the project. Gino is the initial creator of this project. He provided a lot of advice and assistance including continuous consultations, meetings, comments, and suggestions, all of which were invaluable. Furthers, he allowed me a sufficient degree of flexibility for me to manage the project and to solve problems critically. Without him, this project would not have existed.
  • Lead developer of EyeWitness, Harris Wai, is a Master candidate in Multimedia and Entertainment Technology and obtained his BSc(Hons) from the Department of Computing at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His research interests include the design of games and simulations, development of game engines, and the use of games and simulations in formal learning environments.
  • John Nguyen, lead of animation team. He helped a lots on manage the animation team and his assists in game design.
  • Russell Hughes, he contributes a lot for my research and create the terrain for the prototype.
  • Animation team including Dan Cormick, Gordon Cheng, Parrish Rodgers, Sonia Tyndale, Thomas Tam, and lots of Higher Diploma students.
  • Erick Wujcik, project game designer. Erick provides a lot of valuable idea of game design. Last but not least, my special thanks goes to my kind family and my girlfriend, Miss Onion Yeung, for their love and support.
  • Edward Hung, Composer of the music score of EyeWitness.
